History

2006: Over one thousand people from across the United States gathered at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco, October 27–28, 2006, to discuss ways to reduce global poverty at a national conference sponsored by several major Catholic organizations, including the University of San Francisco Lane Center for Catholic Studies and Social Thought and the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The conference, titled “Point 7 Now! Mobilizing American Catholic Faithful to End Global Poverty,” focused on the Millennium Development Goals and the need for fair trade, debt forgiveness and increased aid to poor countries in order to end extreme poverty, or, as keynote speaker Jeffrey Sachs explained, the poverty the kills.

2007: The Episcopal Diocese of California and other religious bodies joined and helped organize the second Point 7 Now Action conference October 27, 2007, and soon we began to work on establishing ourselves as an ongoing organization.

2008–10: Evolving from a mainly Christian organization, we became fully interfaith and organized as as the Interfaith Millennium Development Goals Coalition. Accomplishments included:

  • Organizing visits with House and Senate offices in the San Francisco Bay Area to brief and lobby our legislators and their aides on the Millennium Development Goals and the interfaith support for investing federal dollars in their achievement.
  • Becoming a Cooperation Circle of the United Religions Initiative.
  • Educating high school students about the MDGs.
  • Holding an interfaith luncheon briefing to build capacity and support and generate publicity.
  • Networking with Interfaith Youth Corps, the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, the Global Marshall Plan, and other organizations working for bottom-up international development.
  • Creating hubs in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
  • Planning and creating the One Voice of Faith Conference.
